Festival Update

On Saturday 16th July the Gensing and Central St Leonards Community Forum will host the 6th St Leonards Festival.  Due the economic situation effecting funding this year it has been decided to consolidate the year’s festival on to one site.  The traditional street market will now take place on Oudenaarde Walk, which runs along the front of the main part of Warrior Square gardens.  The market will be open from 11am to 8pm.

We hope that you will join us this year and look forward to receiving your completed applications together with your cheque and any necessary documentation.  Application forum can be obtained from the forum office at the Community Information Centre 16 Silchester Road or by e-mail to office@gcsl.org.uk Leonards If you require any further information please contact Beverly Winchester on 01424 438291 or email [beverly.winchester@gcsl.org.uk]

St Leonards Festival

As you may be aware there has been some concern about delivering a Festival in St leonards this year. The key concern has been around funding (no surpises). However following discussions between the hosts The Gensing & Central St Leonards Forum and HBC we are now  pleased to say that a Festival will happen this year and although somewhat reduced in scale, we hope not in quality. The Forum (Volunteers) will once again be organising the event this year and be supported by some funding from HBC.

The Festival will take place on the 16th July and all planned activities will be in and around Warrior Square Gardens. If you would like to know more, please contact either Beverly or Sylvia at the Community Information Centre at 16, Silchester Rd or Phone 438291.

Any ideas, volunteers and donations would help a lot, so lets get the SBA in there.

SBA: New Constitution, New committee, officers and members.

At a meeting tonight, 9/5/2011, at The Magnet Centre, the new SBA constitution was adopted and new officers and ordinary members of a new committee were elected, (links here or on the right).

This means we can get on with being the core body representing business interests in St Leonards, and contribute our input to HBC, and other various official and semi official bodies.

Watch this space…

Nominations: they are coming in.

Nominations are coming in for the positions on the SBA committee, thanks to all involved both nominated and the proposers.

More nominations would be great, especially from areas without any potential representation:
Kings Road: 1 nomination
Silchester Road: none
London Road: none
Norman Road: two nominations
Grand Parade: two nominations
Marina: one nomination
Other & freelance/homeworkers: none

Ideally it would be good to have at least one person from each area. There is still time!

Nominations: no tidal wave of them yet..

Please think about nominating yourself of any other eligible person for a place on the new SBA committee.
Details of what is going on can be found here, and there are links in the sidebar on the right too.

You can even see who has been nominated to date here

Cross Street: Your thoughts…

OK, it’s been some time, things are meant to have settled in, The Kings Road changes are done, but, (big but?), what do you all think of Cross Street been closed off?
It adds a large distance to travel to get to London Road, now you have to go via the sea front or cruise suburban streets, It only seems handy for the patrons of the pubs at each end… what do you think?

Perhaps HBC should be asked what they think (they were doing), and why many SBA members thought there were assurances that this would not happen.

Please leave your thoughts in the comments.

Reactions to the proposed New Constitution

Reactions to the proposed new constitution: Do you want to add yours?
We would value any feedback.

  • Good job but only one comment: suggest that the phrase- in ‘Objectives’ para (g) ‘ethnic background’ be replaced with the word ‘ethnicity’. Thank you.
  • St Leonards is a big area and includes Silverhill, Hollington, parts of The Ridge, West St Leonards etc etc. Unless the association really means that anyone trading in the whole of St Leonards is eligible to join, then it may want to define it more closely.
  • Membership – the association may want to limit the number of members from any one business. For example, there will be businesses/professions in the area with more than one director/partner. Under the current constitution it could be argued that all of the directors/partners could be members and all of them could conceivably end up on the executive committee.
  • The group may want to consider limiting the term that any individual can serve – either as an officer bearer or as a member of the executive committee – if it hasn’t already. As the constitution currently stands, someone could be an officer and member of executive committee for as long as the organisation lasts.
  • I recommend that the constitution set out that there will be the following officers – as a minimum: a chairman, a secretary and a treasurer.
  • 5, Also, the treasurer should produce regular financial reports to the committee, as well as at the AGM.
  • In the equalities objective, can we remove politics.

Committee & Constitution

The working group has being,..working, on the new constitution and there is a copy up for examination and comment on The New SBA pages. Also there are nomination forms for positions on the committee: Chair, Vice chair, Secretary, Treasurer and ordinary members. Can you help?
The meeting to discuss and vote on all this will be on 9th May at 6:30 in The Magnet Centre, London Road, St Leonards on Sea.

Any comments?

Meeting report

Very briefly:

the (well attended) meeting agreed to set up a working group to establish a constitution for the SBA. Members from the various geographical parts of the SBA are all represented on the working group, as well as someone for those without a shopfront, but in business nevertheless.

The 10 members of the working group will meet on the 29th of March, and take things forward from there.

Anybody can contribute to the process by using the forum on this site, or by leaving a comment.
