Newsletter

Yes we have a newsletter being prepared. As a membership drive we are printing it rather than just having it here, and it will be distributed in the next week or so.

The basic points are that the SBA has a shiny new constitution, a new committee and the newsletter, more importantly, tells you what The SBA does for the area.
We think more can be done and are working on a campaign, Cross Street, and trying to begin a large scale marketing plan to help bring footfall to the area.
All this is time consuming and costly, so we are trying to raise a kitty by charging a very modest membership fee.
If you have any suggestions as to how you might help the committee, other members with special offers or anything at al, please let a committee member know.
One thing members will now get is a good business and web listing: see samples here: http://csba.co.uk/businesses/business-services/
Have a look at the newsletter, ( and if you could help deliver it that would be hot), and let us know.

At the moment you can download it here, (word.doc), and here, (pdf)

Nominations: they are coming in.

Nominations are coming in for the positions on the SBA committee, thanks to all involved both nominated and the proposers.

More nominations would be great, especially from areas without any potential representation:
Kings Road: 1 nomination
Silchester Road: none
London Road: none
Norman Road: two nominations
Grand Parade: two nominations
Marina: one nomination
Other & freelance/homeworkers: none

Ideally it would be good to have at least one person from each area. There is still time!

Nominations: no tidal wave of them yet..

Please think about nominating yourself of any other eligible person for a place on the new SBA committee.
Details of what is going on can be found here, and there are links in the sidebar on the right too.

You can even see who has been nominated to date here

Committee & Constitution

The working group has being,..working, on the new constitution and there is a copy up for examination and comment on The New SBA pages. Also there are nomination forms for positions on the committee: Chair, Vice chair, Secretary, Treasurer and ordinary members. Can you help?
The meeting to discuss and vote on all this will be on 9th May at 6:30 in The Magnet Centre, London Road, St Leonards on Sea.

Meeting report

Very briefly:

the (well attended) meeting agreed to set up a working group to establish a constitution for the SBA. Members from the various geographical parts of the SBA are all represented on the working group, as well as someone for those without a shopfront, but in business nevertheless.

The 10 members of the working group will meet on the 29th of March, and take things forward from there.

Anybody can contribute to the process by using the forum on this site, or by leaving a comment.

Outline Agenda

An outline agenda for tomorrows meeting is below. The focus of the meeting has changed slightly to establishing a working group to determine how we all want to move the SBA forwards, what we want to see for businesses in St Leonards and how we get there.

We still need input, more now than ever, so see you tomorrow.

Christmas: the meeting, (and some traffic).

A report of the meeting.

It was well attended thanks to Lucy suggesting and distributing leaflets.  Thanks to everyone who turned up.

TRAFFIC

The west side of Norman Road is back to 2 hour parking (from 1 hour), thanks to the SBA. And thanks to the council listening, which won’t happen if Sussex take over traffic from Hastings. Protest! See next item.

Parking Management: there has been an agreement in place between HBC and ESCC to manage parking arrangements and share the income generated from on street parking and fixed penalties.  ESCC as the Highway Authority are the responsible body and the agreement with HBC allows for the income to be reinvested within the borough for improvements to the local roads.  ESCC now wish to terminate the agreement and have issued a notice to HBC to that effect.  This means that HBC will have no control over the on street parking costs or enforcement; there will be no effective local control or safeguards over the parking regime.  The SBA has fought hard to prevent paid on street parking in St Leonards and there is no guarantee that the current arrangement will stand.  HBC are still making representations to ESCC and it is believed that the SBA should support their efforts to withstand the changes.  Richard Homewood has offered to attend a meeting to keep the members informed.

Cross Street: Why is this still closed? Why is there no response from the council? Why was it closed at all? Who benefited? This is an essential part of sensible traffic flow and it seems that it is been ignored. Well, pressure time. It would be helpful if individual letters should be sent to Cllr. Jeremy Birch, Leader of HBC, Simon Hubbard, Head of Regeneration and to Rasoul Shahilow, Parking Services Manager. Or phone them, email, whatever. let them know that SBA members are not happy.

CHRISTMAS

The council has no money to ride to the rescue and provide Christmas. Well, …they have a bit, but it needs careful consideration and careful spending.

There is a CHRISTMAS Website where you can leave ideas of what you think might work, see what ideas were raised at the meeting, leave message, volunteer to help…..BUT, PLEASE, do it soon. We are all in this together, and unless we step up it will not happen.

More soon.

VICE CHAIRMAN

Ade Roseje who has Robyns Out of Africa on Kings Road has agreed to be Vice Chair. Full profile, (well, a few details), and a picture coming soon.
